Type 3B is a tight spiral curl with moderate shrinkage*. These look like classic "perm" curls with a loop range that can fit around something as thick as a sharpie marker to something as thin as a ballpoint pen. The coiling on 3B begins close to the root, with only about 1.5" (3.8 cm) of straight hair between root and coils. 

*We're using this term figuratively. Shinkage only happens to biological human hair. As hair dries or loses moisture, each strand contracts. This is called "shrinkage," and it is what makes naturally curly human hair coil to form a curl. We just throw in the nerdy details as an FYI. 🤓
